about me

i'm maddy, i'm 19, i'm from washington, dc., and post-gap year, i'll be reading english literature at the university of st andrews in fife, scotland. after much deliberation, i chose to take a gap year because i wanted to explore the world and to grow as an individual before i go back to school. my ultimate goal with it is to experience new things and learn more about the world at large, and also to learn more about myself.

a bit more about me: i'm a fan of reading old books, reading new books, reading the phone book if i'm really desperate, writing, drawing and painting, photography, being active (anything from yoga to tennis to hiking to kayaking), music, healthy eating, social activism, travel, and much more.

my basic plan for this year:

  • i spent 6 weeks of the early fall in córdoba, argentina, interning with a human rights organization, living with argentine hosts, and learning spanish.
  • then i was at home for a couple of months, spending the holidays with my friends and family and working retail to save up as much money as i could.
  • in january i headed to israel on a birthright trip, then spent time wwoofing (volunteering on an organic farm) doing cooperative farm work in exchange for room and board for 3 weeks, hiking in the negev, and backpacking around israel with pit stops in the west bank & jordan.
  • and in the springtime, i'm spending 6 weeks enrolled in a language program at l'institut de touraine in tours, france, brushing up on my french skills and then backpacking around europe.
i've been accompanied in argentina and france by my best friend marit- my partner in crime; the ethel to my lucy (or is she the lucy to my ethel?)
we believe in many shared tenets; namely, that travel is good for the soul, and that peanut butter is a food group. you can find her travel blog here
i'm keeping a blog so that everyone at home and everyone i meet can see what i'm up to this year, but primarily this blog is a way for me to document my adventures, thoughts, and ideas in a way that's more meaningful and timeless than facebook photo albums or 140-character tweets.

join me. it'll be quite a trip.

ciao
